Vented Room
Pikes Peak Makerspace (PPM) provides a vented, well-lit room for painting and staining, and so forth.
Our Vented Room is roughly 14 x 6.5 sq. ft. (730 cu. ft.)
It is for all our members to use without any additional required training (Level 1).
Reservations are required.

Safety First
Members must know the following information:

PPM Fire Escape Plan
- Fire Escape Plan maps are posted throughout the Makerspace.
- There are 7 fire extinguishers on the fire escape plan map. Review the PPM Fire Escape Plan for locations.
First Aid
- There is a FIRST AID Supply Cabinet in our Kitchen Area.
- FIRST AID Kits are available in four areas: the Kitchen, Metal Shop, Wood Shop and CNC Room.
Eye Wash Stations
- Emergency Eye & Face Wash Stations are mounted in four areas: the Kitchen, Wood Shop, CNC Room and Vented Room.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Wear protective equipment in all Wood and Metal Shop Areas.
- Wear gloves when using Isopropyl Alcohol and other cleaners.
Hazardous Chemicals
- All hazardous chemicals must be stored in the yellow hazardous chemical storage cabinet located in the Vented Room.
- Review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information of unknown products before use.
- SDS information is available via the QR code on the hazardous chemical storage cabinet or this spreadsheet.
- Do not bring dangerous chemicals to the makerspace.
- Spray paint, stains, and other approved items must be stored in the hazardous chemical storage cabinet in the Vented Room.
- Please DO NOT paint indoors.
Impairment
- The use of PPM equipment requires you to be alert, attentive, and focused.
- Do not use any PPM work area, or any PPM tools, if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Training
Step-By-Step Process for Using the Vented Room
- Use the Sign In Sheet
- Set fan and timer
- Sign in with QR code
- Setup paper
- Wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
- Put away all holding stands and materials after the final coat
- Absolutely no paint or finishing materials left out, ever
- Remove workpiece as soon as dry
Rules for the Vented Room
- Projects left over 36 hours will be subject to removal from the area
- All hazardous chemicals, including spray paint, stains, and other approved items must be stored in the yellow hazardous chemical storage cabinet located in the Vented Room
- Review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information of unknown products before use
- SDS information is available via the QR code on the hazardous chemical storage cabinet
- Do not bring dangerous chemicals to the makerspace
- Must be continuously ventilated during occupied hours
- Take frequent fresh air breaks while painting
- Leave painted areas if you experience eye watering, headaches, dizziness, or breathing problems
- Turn on the timer and leave the door closed while in use
- When done, leave timer on to continue ventilating the room properly
- Use the correct PPE when you’re painting. Items such as a spray painting mask, and gloves are vital
- Before you start to use your spray cans, make sure that you store them away from heat and fire. The aerosols are highly combustible, and will cause a lot of damage and potentially a lot of harm
- Clean your entire area after your job is complete; including, but not limited to, tables, walls, floors, cabinets, all materials put away
- Do not leave anything out long term

Equipment Reservations
- Use of the Vented Room REQUIRES a reservation.
- Must reserve the Vented Room at least 2 hours in advance.
- Projects left over 36 hours will be subject to removal from the area.
- If at all possible, limit your use of the vented room to ONE table.

Hand Tools
- Return all tools to their proper location after use. This rule applies to all areas of our Makerspace.

Red Tags
- If equipment needs repairs, place a Red Tag on it and report it via the Pikes Peak Makerspace Slack channel #red-tags-issues
- This advises others on the malfunctioning equipment and ensures that actions can be taken to service/repair the equipment.
